THE JOSEPH PROJECT
Name for a series of activities, actions and interactions being held throughout 2007 and spearheaded by Ghana to re-establish the African Nation as a nation of all Africans. The Joseph project is Ghana's invitation to the Diasporans to make the return journey, to reconnect with the land of their ancestors and their brothers and sisters in the homeland.

Volunteer in Ghana
With scores of well-organized volunteer programs in Ghana, it was not easy to compile this month's volunteer program recommendations. However, it is easy to recommend Ghana as a place to go if you are considering volunteering abroad.
The Republic of Ghana is a beautiful country located on the Gulf of Guinea. World renown for Kente cloth and Ntumpane drums, Ghana is also a major exporter of gold, timber, and cocoa. With its rich culture, geography, and history, Ghana provides volunteers with plenty to do, see, and learn.
I have chosen to highlight the following three organizations (although there are many organizations offering volunteer programs in Ghana) primarily for their diversity of volunteer oportunities and reasonable costs.
World Endeavors.
World Endeavors is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota and has volunteer and intern programs all over the world. They oversee the following programs in Ghana:
- Orphanage Assistance in Ghana
- Teaching Children in Ghana
- Community Development in Ghana
- Youth Soccer Coaching in Ghana
- Health Education in Ghana
Costs range from $1050 for 2 weeks to $2300 for 12 weeks. Includes placement with a local family, three meals per day, airport pick-up, volunteer placement and orientation, local tour, ongoing support.
Ikando.
Want a volunteer placement that will allow you to use those skills you've honed on the job? Ikando, founded by two volunteers from the UK and Holland, and based in London, UK, Amsterdam, the Netherlands and Accra, Ikando allows you to bring your skill set to your volunteer placement. Some of Ikando's more unusual programs are:
-
Wild Gecko Handicrafts , Carpenter, Blacksmith, Jeweler. Cost for 4 weeks: US Dollars 913, Euros 717. Includes a flat, volunteer placement and orientation, airport pick-up and drop-off, 24/7 support, intro to life in Ghana, and a $100 donation to Wild Gecko Handicrafts.
- Foundation for Contemporary Art in Accra, Fundraiser, Office Administrator, Project Coordinator. Cost for 4 weeks: US Dollars 1239, Euros 971. Includes a flat, volunteer placement and orientation, airport pick-up and drop off, 24/7 support, intro to life in Ghana, and a $100 donation to FCA.
- Ghana Music Foundation in Accra, Fundraiser, Project Coordinator, Promotions Coordinator, Product Developer. Cost for 4 weeks: US Dollars 1239, Euros 971. Includes a flat, volunteer placement and orientation, airport pick-up and drop off, 24/7 support, and a $100 donation to GMF. forex trading
RUSO. Rural Upgrade Support Organization.
RUSO is a non-profit NGO affiliated with the Peace Corps and based in Ghana. All of their work is in rural communities. If you don't want to spend thousands of dollars to volunteer, and you are not bothered by slightly Spartan living conditions, RUSO may be a good choice for you. (Also consider Volunteers for Peace, an organization that I have volunteered with in the past; VFP is even less expensive although accommodations can range from a cot in a church to a sleeping bag in a tent.) A few of RUSO's programs:
- Tree Planting. Costs: $300 registration fee + $25 per week of stay. Includes accommodation with a guest family or in a volunteer guesthouse, airport pick-up and return, transportation to village, volunteer orientation. RUSO states that food costs, which they don't cover, if you are willing to eat local food, are about $5 per week.
- Micro-Finance Programs. Looking for Social Workers and Business Management.
- HIV / AIDS Awareness.
