After the Nor’easter from Hurricane Noel turned my Saturday morning grocery run into a woman-versus-mighty-winds bag hauling adventure, I decided to table my errand running and spend the day knitting. I finished knitting my very first sock two weekends ago and I started knitting my second sock last week (1 skein Schoeller Stahl Fortissima Colori Socka Color Mexiko Country, no. 13). I have so enjoyed knitting these socks that I am starting to think I might end up one of those sock obsessed knitters. : ) Knitting socks is a lot easier than I thought it would be and I like that socks are something I can give just about anyone. If you are thinking that you might like to tackle knitting your first pair of socks, but you are a wee bit nervous about the whole turning the heel thing, and in your ideal life you would like to tackle the heel in a supportive and fun environment, then I would highly recommend taking a sock class at Spark Crafts near Porter Square. In fact, I would recommend visiting Spark even if you are not into knitting but would like to learn more about beading, metal work, crochet, card making, even rug hooking. The shop is NOT a stuffy, lost in the sixties, craft supplies store. Spark is bright and spacious with a funky, modern feel and the staff is personable, attentive, and knowledgeable. And while I am on a recommending roll, check out the sock obsessed blog by Australian knitter Ozknitter. Better yet, take a look at her socks slideshow. And if you are from the Boston area, and you knit, you MUST look at Grumperina’s poppy socks and canal du midi socks.
